Brew Review: Sleeping Giant IPA
Tuesday 21 February, 2012 | BW
After the disappointment of the previous Gage Roads beer review (Atomic Pale Ale) it was only fair to give the brewer’s IPA a test run.
This reviewer counts IPAs as his favourite style of beer, loving how they manage to balance a hoppy heaviness with a fruity refreshing flavour, all with a high alcohol content kick. So Sleeping Giant, at 5.4%, had a lot to live up to.
The beer was a dark caramel colour and appeared very fizzy. The scent was very nice, mildly hoppy and had a lingering pleasant scent which was hard to determine. In the mouth it felt crisp and (thankfully) not as fizzy as it looked when first poured.
The beer had a mid-range alcohol kick after swallowing and the alcohol taste stayed on, as did an unpleasant metallic flavour. There was not a lot else there. The beer was slightly nutty, with a creamy aftertaste, with a mild tartness like berries.
It was not as hoppy or fruity as you would expect from an IPA. Overall, it was not great and won’t be counted among the reviewer’s favourite IPAs.
Verdict – 3/5 stars.
