Brew Review: Gage Roads Atomic Pale Ale
Tuesday 24 January, 2012 | BW
Describing itself as “all natural American style”, hopes were high for this offering from Western Australia’s Gage Roads brewery.
Gage Roads has established its brand very well in the past few years with recognisable lagers, light beers and a cider. So while it may be newer on the scene, the brand is hardly boutique.
Onto the beer, which looked very fizzy (for a pale ale) and had a dark honey colour.
Smelling it didn’t reveal much, it had a slightly tame scent with a hint of sweet tobacco, which suited this reviewer who’s impartial to a fag with his beer. That tame scent mirrored the flavour, which was very light. It had a strong alcohol flavour, not expected from the 4.7% content, and was slightly syrupy.
Overall, the beer was a let down. It didn’t have enough hoppy flavour for a pale ale, and was more akin to a strong lager.
The reviewer’s girlfriend, who is a fan of insipid light lagers, didn’t mind it, which bought the Atomic Pale Ale an extra star.Verdict – 3/5 stars.
