A little anaesthetic, and the kitchen oven

A few years ago we were proudly showing off our small herd of cattle to a retired farmer friend who had earlier joined us on the back deck for an enjoyable lunch. We were expecting our first drop of calves and we thought the expectant mothers looked magnificent. He thought they looked way too fat and promptly told us so. He also advised us to expect calving problems particularly with two tubby heifers that were due to calf in just a matter of weeks.

MURRAY Ball’s New Zealand cartoon strip Footrot Flats has always struck a note with me and it’s no coincidence Jess, our not-so-pure border collie, was named after the Dog’s girlfriend featured in the story.
