THE Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to cut the official interest rate by 50 basis points yesterday has been hailed as “courageous” by economists but they warn that for the cuts to have a positive impact, banks need to pass on the central bank cut and consumer sentiment needs to improve.

THE cash rate has been left on hold this week following the Reserve Bank of Australia’s board meeting earlier this week but a possible rate cut next month may be on the cards.
RBA governor Glen Stevens said April’s cash rate would remain unchanged at 4.25%. The cash rate was last cut in November and December last year by a quarter of a percentage point each time, taking the cash rate from 4.75% down to 4.25%.

COMMENTS made by the Reserve Bank of Australia blow the whistle on the banking industry’s excuses for the recent rate hike, says consumer watchdog Choice.
In a speech recently, RBA assistant governor Guy Debelle said recent increases in lending rates had “been with the aim of maintaining profitability”.
